Carol Shields

Carol Shields forged a pathway that many are following. She helped bring Manitoba and Canadian writers into world focus. She was Manitoba's only Pulitzer Prize winner. She also received the Order of Canada. Her novel, The Stone Diaries won a Pulitzer Prize and a Governor General's Award and was short listed for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

She encouraged aspiring writers and helped shape the Canadian literary scene with her teaching at the University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia and the University of Manitoba. She continued this tradition when, she became chancellor of the University of Winnipeg in 1996.
